Country House

Country House: Welcome

- University projects -

2nd year 1st semester 2016

Chidea, Cluj county, Romania

The "Country House" project is designed to a small village, to Chidea.  In Chidea and in its region people have developed a specific craft of shaping the local volcanic (tuff) rock. Almost everything in Chidea - houses, side buildings (barns, storerooms, warehouses, stables) and even fences have been built of this carved stone. The diverse usage of the stone brought a good name to the local builders and masons who were esteemed even outside the borders of the settlement, throughout Transylvania. The here presented family house tries to keep the identity of the "Village Carved in Stone" with its street facade with a traditional building style but goes through a dematerialization towards the garden (stone glass-wood-vegetation garden), where also the greenhouse takes place. The house is designed to give place for small scale rural agriculture, where the family can take care of vegetables, fruits, and fruit trees already present at the site. The kitchen, dining room and the living room with a grill terrace are oriented towards the garden (with separate entrance to the basement, to the cold storage). The main entrance to the house is from the side with a windfang marked by the old walnut tree, as a border where the dematerialization starts.
